Although there is no legal requirement that employers utilize a formal Grievance Procedure, there are multiple reasons for utilizing a reasonable grievance procedure which allows employees a formal means to resolve disputes.  There are times when a supervisor may overreact in disciplining an employee.  Other times some event may cause the employee to feel mistreated.  A grievance procedure can help a disgruntled employee let off steam.  Although you will doubtless receive many grievances that lack merit, on balance having a policy in place allows employees a forum in which to be heard.
